Les Misérables 悲惨世界
** It's the note I intended to post a few months back, but seems in time for its new movie fame... also recent tragedies around the world..
C'est le temps de la vie, qui cirulate tout le temps.
Miserable life, exist everywhere, yet, when you look at it, its 'miserables', is repetitive throughout history.
Les Misérables by Victor Hugo, is, no doubt, one of the best novel in the world, not only it touches people but deep into humanity, the righteousness one must decide while living, on this miserable world...
-- On an interesting note: the musical created in French, yet populate by English act, finding original French version of it, is bit difficult w/o iTune.
Les misérables (Paris, Thèâtre Mogador 1991)

How miserable is miserable??
I'm pretty sure everyone can list things that they feel miserable about, in this modern era. However, Jean Valjean's crime, was stealing loaf of bread, for his seven nephew/nieces, then attempt of jailbreaks lead to nineteen years in prison. In today's viewpoint, what?!! and most of us would be dead in the old days...
In Hugo's novel, Les Miserable and Hunchback of Notre-Dame, a sense of good vs. evil is often twisted, it lead readers to rethink the concept of good/evil, and the wide gray area in between. After all, there isn't pure good or pure evil.
Is it true that poorer people are more good, while those in authorities and power are pure evil??
If so, in thousand years of history, why can't these thing change??
Moral value and ethical standards, is it really that different than say, two thousand years ago??
Christmas is, a reminder of foolish society and a guy whom tried to change it.
In modern day, we have more guys/gals trying to change the same foolish societies around the world.
Therefore, rebellion, change of dynasty, change of nation, change of leaders, change of ........ All seems, the same... ???
"If you can't learn from history...." Obviously, people don't learn from history... cause it'll remove the fundamental right of being human: reckless.
Vass amount of information throughout history, is difficult for one to swallow, and utilize them to the point. Thus, when things happen, we ought to track to where we felt most comfortable. For one, to keep remind him/herself about the good deed, is a pressure and torture.
Jean Valjean, was shown a good deed, because of that selfless act of the Bishop Myriel, the seed of goodness, ironed into Jean Valjean's heart, remind him daily, drives him away from evil.
Honestly, how many people can do that to him/herself? on daily bases? If so, what make others? Angel of evils?
I believe there's more good in a person than evil, however, often circumstance made people making wrong decisions, act as according to society norms. In a culture where tolerance for failure, setbacks, aren't allowed, it's very easy to brand someone evil or dumb, or low life.
Jean Valjean, was a low life, yet, he changed himself.
Monsieur Thénardier and Madame Thénardier, are low life, and stayed low life w/ a twist.
Éponine, was a spoiled girl, a low life thief, then falls into love's trap and die for it.
Cosette, a girl with loss of memory when grown up; French version of the drama shown her intellect a bit than the musical. You can't imagine a girl singing "Castle in the Cloud" forgot everything when she's a young woman.
Fantine, the most sorrow figure in the story, her world crashed regardless what and how she tried. As a vivid contrast to Valjean, whom, he got god's well and proceed with his good deed.
Of course, there are more characters in the novel/musical, but, which one are you??
Low life aren't as bad as it seems, Monsieur Thénardier and Madame Thénardier, are constantly happy, well, they do know how to make themselves happy. While all the good guys, aren't much so. Constant pressure or guidelines that make them vulnerable, joy or happiness for them, is far far away.
Les Misérables, which one???

In light of Newtown Ct. incident on Friday, Dec. 14th, twenty six and seven years old children where shot to death, with six additional heroic adults, all females, whom gave their life to protect their students. In human tragedy, it's unbearable to watch and hear about the news, yet it happened.
Les Misérables, Les Misérables, Les Misérables...
What have we, as a society done, to aid others when they needed the most?
Icebergs took period of time to built up, there's no simple answer to digest what happened, or what went wrong with the shooter. Yes, mental illness is one attribute, but that's not the answer to what caused his behavior.
We are all kind, emotional, and heartwarming, yet, it's time to be kinder, warmer, and more acceptable, for those less fortunate than us...
We, can, and should understand, others' hardship, if not, than don't make harsh judgements, 'cause it's not helping, only cause more tragedy in time.

Les Misérables, a novel, a musical, a music, strike to those who listens, who reads, who, understands.
Act of love, in the land of, 'Les Misérables'.
