Time flies when one is in the process of survival, as the needles tick, and tack, around that 12 digits, without sending me, a warning... ⚠️ ⌛️ -TonyT
👦🏻🧑🏻 --- > 👱🏻♂️🧔🏻👴 😱😱😱
Alright, it has been 30 years since I moved to Silicon Valley, October 15th, ‘89 - ‘19....
Exactly the 3rd day after I moved here, trying to adjust to the new home and surroundings, Loma Prieta Earthquake occurred, Oct. 17th, ‘89; I was, at that moment, stood between 2 cars on my driveway, feeling weird about that shaking ground...
Like: what the .... ?!! 🤯 why is the sky moving??
Dad yelled, pulled me away from the cars, mom and brother still stuck at the hallway, trying to stand still and come out the door 🚪, which, proved difficult and they both fell down the floor with shaking emotions....
Yeah, that was the first impression of Silicon Valley, extremely unlike the L.A. suburb I adopted to and comfortably living for a year prior. Yeah, we have earthquakes in Taipei, but it’s not as extreme as the Loma Prieta Earthquake!!!
Gee, everything is Grand in America huh?!! Even earthquake has to be world scaled~~
What a joy that was..
🤔🙄🤦♂️
Of course, it’s just a pure “luck”, for me to experienced the “S.F. Style Welcome”, not many people receive the same treatment as I did... that counts for something!! 😂
Talk about spending 30 years in the same place, Silicon Valley, the original unknown orchard farms, and region’s transformation into the Technology Hub of the world, leading the world to human evolution, by, corrupting each human beings with the irreplaceable computing power, from mass desktop PCs to tiny smartphones of today... then, soon might advance to a single implanted chip inside human body, of a future generations that cannot live without US, the Silicon Valley tech gangs....
It’s, an experience of the lifetime... seriously.
I moved here, in early 90s era, roughly a decade after the silicon miracle, of the Fairchild & Intel, HP, etc, the early pioneers of Silicon Valley... at that time, this place is still humble and small town environment, lack of flock of Asian & international retails, unlike Los Angeles, where oriental shops are everywhere and new immigrants took over 40% of school demographics.
But, one thing was nice, people were so nice and kind, much friendlier than average L.A. people at the time.
It was the small town America, although we can see the growing new immigrants on daily basis, well, I‘m practically the new students’ orientation tour guide at my junior high school, obviously I “know” how many new immigrants were there...
Wait, I just relocated here myself, how was it possible for me to be the guidance person??? 🤔🤔🤔
Well, those advance students, hardly interested in dealing with FOBs....
Fresh Off The Boats people are annoying... trust me, I know... I’m practically one of them, but with “one year’s US school experience”!!! So I’m the tool those teachers asked, for helps.... 😂
Still, FOBs, are totally annoying spoiled crying children... 👶
I don’t recall I was that troublesome back in L.A.... I thought I managed not to bother others for help as much as I can, heck, I even found my way home from bus rides without knowing the home address, on the 1st day of the school... where my aunt Ivy and mom just dropped me to school with no instructions and I don’t speak a word of English... that, was an adventure for the new FOB... totally worth it... 😑
Yet, those Silicon Valley FOBs, were tediously delicate and practically wants a nanny by their side for everything... as if, stepping out of their comfort zone is the deadliest thing in life!!
Dude, school is for experience and learning, if you cannot open up, what else you going to learn?? And, schools are not for education on textbooks, but also, socialize with other students... mingling with others... especially, the teachers.. ✌️
Sadly, besides those advance students, I’m one of the few FOBs, who are friends with other groups of ‘non-Chinese’...
Well, Japanese & Korean people are much nicer to be friends with, plus, girls are much, much, much cuter~~ 😝😝😝
Yes, back in early 90s, there were tons of Japanese students in Silicon Valley, sadly, they left the area and I hardly knew any existed after late 90s.
The valley, was changed.
Slowly and unexpectedly, the old ways of living gradually gave up on the Dot Com boom, where venture capital funds made the valley toward the greedy market, full of people “digging golds”.
On the industrial side, the old hardships engineers transformed into the societal dogs, lying and tricking idiotic investors for millions of funds to the product of zero, correlatively, bump up the real estate value, to make hardworking people, unable to afford the quality of life for their family.
Luckily, I graduated high school just before the Dot Com era, so I watched the rise and fall of those insane people and house boom & crashes. The 1st really none-sense in this valley.
Post Dot Com era, this valley didn’t learn much from previous failures, for a period of a nearly a decade, well, less than five years after the 1999 Dot Com busts, the valley tried again to rise up, climbing to another peak, until the Great Recession...
During the process, this valley totally shifted, from traditional US suburban living, migrating towards the international community; we started to see more and more immigrants flocking into the area, brought in multicultural societies to the region.
Yet, one thing that’s different is that, pre 90s era, new immigrants coming to the area, to adapt to the “American lifestyles”, while adding their own cultural heritages to the valley, and be part of the new Bay Area, the enhanced Silicon Valley.
It was totally different, when the generations of new immigrants coming into the valley post the 2000s. This time around, these “new people”, want something else, they seek fortune and vast opportunities to disrupt, shakes as much profits as they can, while refuse to adapt to the valley lifestyle, but hold on tight to their own “style of living”.
Children at schools, aren’t excited about American culture but seeking loopholes to advance their grades, so they can advance to top college and universities in the States, while not trying to educate themselves about others’ cultural heritages, or differences...
Yes, in other words, the late coming immigrants, aren’t exactly the naive FOBs of the past, but with strong aim for success, whatever way & methods necessary, no ethical standards required.
Likewise, same thing with the children, genes comes from the parents...
The valley’s work environment, changed.
When Google first started to offer “FREE” items and perks to its employees... the rise of selfishness and human nature, all surfaces up the table. People becoming greedier and utilitarianism, neighbor don’t “bother” one another, unless wanting “something”...
Roadside manner becoming a thing in the past, people started to act like, “New Yorker”?! Yet, at least New Yorkers still mingle with others...
Yes, thanks to Google and high profile stock companies, The Valley, is turning into the Metropolitan that no one is ready for.
No, sky high housing prices are not the problem, but the real issues, are with the people itself.
When people cannot appreciate one another but always seeking ways to step upon one another, then, the societal issues will become the hurdle no one else can solve. Aka, homelessness.
A city, or a region, will always evolve and change, for better or worse, it’s just the natural cycle of life; however, Silicon Valley, the people who lives here, and the public officials who governs the cities, do not have the proper training nor realization, on what the true metropolitan is, and what scopes are required. The bus of disasters, you will see each Silicon Valley cities and S.F. city as well, are clueless on whatever they think they are doing.
In other words, chaos and selfishness are the trait for the entire S.F. Bay Areas.
All because, the valley outgrown itself way too fast, before the residents can realize what they want. In addition, waves of outsiders refuse to “give in” to the “American Lifestyles”.
But I have to say, S.F. Bay Area is still better than L.A. regions, where those new immigrants are truly, “refuse to learn American ways of living”, or speaking English.
Cost of Globalization.
When the information super highways are not the facilitator of melting pot, but further separating each cultures apart from one another, with added biases and discrimination against those who are “different”.
All at the same time, this valley’s high tech corporations, shifted from making profits on innovation and advanced technologies, to NYSE & NASDAQ.
With most profitable companies reside around Sand Hills Road, Palo Alto, and they aren’t even doing high techs, but profits billions from it.
What will a true metropolitan be like??
The Big Apple evolves over 200s years, to become the capital of the modern world;
London, Paris, Berlin, Beijing, all took little over thousands years...
How fast, can Silicon Valley, wants to take over???
Will it ever be ready?
The probable cause of its failure, is likely the quality of the people, residing in the region.
As in the fact about Los Angles, the people aren’t ready, therefore, it cannot be the true unified “Metro”, but just a vast area with separation of tribes.
Yes, tribes. Not Metropolitan material.
Because, the people aren’t ready, to retrain and re-educate themselves, on how and what the true “Globalization & Localization” are.
Seeking short term profits are easy, and tons of shortcuts can be done about it, yet, long term makeover and true transformations, require deep root mentality adjustments and awareness. Once the people understand what they are facing, perhaps, this Valley, might advance another levels or two...
In the mean time, selfishness is norm, and another setback or catastrophic losses, might ease the worsen environment in the area.
Thirty years of living in the same area, is hardly anything unique, but watching and aware the seldom differences in the area, and how its people changed, is the experience one cannot ignore and forget.
Yes, using others as the mirror, one can learn more about,
Human Nature.
That’s, priceless indeed.
When Mother Nature gives us the brain 🧠, we ought to utilize it, to the full potentials.
Instead of the selfish gains.
Speak of which, I do missed those Japanese classmates from junior high... honestly don’t see any like them nowadays.... 👩🏻🦰💃🙄
Life is a torture for sure... 😝
Just kidding, I do meet many good friends in this valley, most still in contact with, thirty years of friendship, gotta count for something... yeah, nice knowing you too~~
So.... what exactly should we do, in the next 30 years???
😉
🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳🥳
Thanks, you are part of my horrible childhood memory~~~ I’m 100% sure you have that same feeling as well!! 😊
