Platonic ideals is like theory of Daoism and Tibetan Buddhism, the exploration of wisdom is always an attraction in the time where knowledge is limited to scholar and elite groups. Even at the elite level, seeking wisdom, gaining insights are considered as a way to move up in society. Even in today's society this practice holds true, just that true wisdom is often difficult to find nowadays... likewise, essence of ancient ideologies aren't as crucial in this materialized world... In a typical Asian society, gender boundary is often hard to fuse around, as older tradition taught that it is always two sides, never a mix of friendships, especially for those who got married; he or she has to pick a side of friends, never a collaboration of both... This practice simply cut away half of the life experiences that took so long to build on...
Knowing doesn't mean doing well, likewise, there outta to be a common ground for mutual friendships in addition to marriage, else life would be, well, quite limited... yet, people live in a vacuum for such a long time, I suppose it is also hard to alter the believe system as well... pick a side would be an easy task...
