Motorola U9...
Motorola U9...
---
Well... first of all, this cell is quite good to use, it's light, long battery, and cheap... suitable for mom's use... plus the digit is larger than most Moto cells... So it's actually a deal to get.
So, updating all the contacts, ringtones, wallpaper, etc... is a must...
Was waiting for the 'micro-usb' cable to come by, since it's the new standard for Moto these days...
Honestly speaking, just do the usual works... don't try the update thing from "Motorola Software Update"...
Since I got the Chinese version from Taiwan, I was pondering what sort of the 'New Update' it will give me over internet... so, trusting Moto... I clicked the 'Update'...
Guess what... after ten min. or so... the cell won't boot up...
Hmm, a nice DOS message pop up:

Bootloader
06.28
Err:A5,70,27,00,1F
MEM_Map Blank
Service Reg'd
Battery OK
OK to Program
Transfer Mode:
USB

If you never seen this, I suggest you not to try... it's not fun... and I didn't even flash the cell through all those programs... It's Moto's own software... damn Moto....
--
So, spent the entire night looking for solutions... well, learn quite a lot on how to 'flash' the cell in various languages, and thanks to net society, various versions can be found... just spend more time in there... mostly from China's site...
Apparently, for U9 and newer Moto cells, bootloader is crucial, so the image has to have a matching bootloader enable for the OS to work... sadly, my Taiwanese version's bootloader can't be found online...
I did, however, successfully reload the ... Russian version... bootloader 06.2A... it does have English in there and has a cool menu system... yet, no Chinese input/view there ne... which defer the purpose why I bought the cell in the first place...
So... the fun of the night was, to explore the new Moto OS system and can't do much about the damage... Glad I bought two of these so I can still have a spare to use and send this one back for, hmm, repair... also glad a friend is around and set to go home next week... ^_^

Afterthought...
Why can't all cells be like iPhone??? with all the languages in there, so there's no language issue...
While I was at Taiwan, couple of us chat about the cell tech and trends... We were amazed by iPhone's success, hugely to its marketing effort, and part for it's simplecity, like the old Palm PDA used to be...
We don't need advance techno whatever, all we want is the thing we can use w/o study the bible... and that's hard to do??
I came to the conclusion, sort of trace back to the PDA era, that I will never buy any cell that has Windows Mobile in there...
For one thing, hated the WM since the PDA age, never think it will work well, the font are too small, too XP/windows like, where there's no large keyboard or mouse to use...
Also, heard tons of complains about the OS... it's stupid, it can't sync, etc. etc...
Then, HTC, which is somewhat popular in Taiwan, a client was interested in that... yet the sales said: "oh, you can't use it in U.S.".... huh?? can't use it? isn't it 3G or quad band??
Later I realize that it's the software issue... HTC only license the 'Chinese' version for Taiwan... just like Windows used to be... for different language, you have to purchase different version... likewise, the cell is the same...
Which... may pave the broaden road for iPhone's OSX and Android (I think...)
The two open source platform: Android & Symbian, and the mighty OSX are more likely to dominate the Cellphone OS war... so, bye bye Mircorsoft~~ we won't miss you... in fact, I never use you... as a cell...
You were saying?? Oh, for Symbian, it's quite easy to alter the language version, unless you got the "U.S. version cell", which you can't alter the product code for updates...
Android... not sure... it's new... and from Google... it should... be very flexible... Just, don't buy the HTC version.... don't think it look good and reliable... More brand ones will come next year, no need to rush... War w/ iPhone 3.0 should be fun...
Oh, Linux is the outlier... it's good but no standards... most likely be replace by Android...
---
So, after the short use of U9, I think it's quite good, not great, but fit for typical use... It might be too light though... ^__^
